Abstract

Increased longevity entails multimorbidity and increased likelihood of dependency, impacting on the quality of life of the elderly and their caregivers, reflected in the burden, anxiety and anguish they feel. Nursing interventions that integrate families into care makes them feel safer and their collaboration can benefit the sick person. Family health nursing should intervene with family well-being and cohesion in mind, enabling the family to mobilize resources and deal with complex transitions. To analyze the evidence on the correlation between family-centered nursing interventions and health gains for the person, caregiver and family, by identifying the outcome measures used. Four interpretative themes emerged: caregiver burden and quality of life; dependent person quality of life; functionality and family relationships; cost-benefit ratio. The nursing interventions implemented in the studies are educational, supportive and brief. There was a significant positive impact, correlating nursing interventions centered on the family, fundamentally in the dimensions related to the quality of life of the person and caregiver(s), overload of the caregiver(s) and, to a lesser extent, in the dimensions of functioning and family relationships, and in the economic cost-effectiveness ratio.
