Abstract

In this fast-paced age, technologies are exploited in the field of medicine and mainly directed to enhance the delivery of drugs. Their objective is to target the drugs to their desired site, avoiding as many harmful side effects as possible. Designing "smart" particles helped in achieving the release in a specific time, to a specific site, and at a specific rate in response to external stimuli. Different polymeric materials are utilized to formulate such drug delivery systems such as micelles, hydrogels, liposomes, and dendrimers. This review will be discussing the different delivery systems in which the response to changes of body temperature is the key to their actions, the procedures employed in their preparation, how to thoroughly characterize the systems, and the fields of their applications. Furthermore, it states some thermosensitive delivery systems that are integrated with other types of stimuli response systems to enhance drug delivery.
