The Effect of Hyperglycemia and Glycemic Control on The Survival of Dental Implants: Literature Review

The placement of dental implants represents a highly predictable procedure for the replacement of missing teeth. Diabetes mellitus represents a common and increasing health problem. The long-term hyperglycemia commonly leads to damage of many tissues and organs of the human body, causing substantial clinical morbidity. The adverse effects of the disease on bone formation and wound healing have raised some concerns about dental implant survival in diabetic patients on the long-term. Based on the available scientific evidence, the placement of dental implant represents a safe and sound way for oral rehabilitation in diabetic patients, providing that precautions are taken regarding the glycemic control. Therefore, there are no contraindications to place dental implants in diabetic patients as long as they are under glycemic control.
