Abstract

The healthcare sector in the UAE is undergoing a major evolution that is mirroring the country's overall transformation into a first-world country. Cancer care plays an essential role in this evolution. The specialty of surgical oncology has now become largely recognized as a result of the efforts of major societies in the world, led by the Society of Surgical Oncology. In parallel with the overall development of the UAE and the development of the healthcare services infrastructure, surgical oncology in the UAE is migrating from individual practices within private institutions to multidisciplinary care in specialized cancer centers offering the complete gamut of state-of-the-art oncology centers. With this evolution, the UAE is poised to become a destination for health tourism, catering to the requirements of nearly a billion people in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
