Smart campus mobility - From concept to realization

The transition of cities to smarter cities requires intelligence in the infrastructure to automate the operations in all domains. Obviously, transportation and mobility is no exception. Relevant stakeholders i.e., city authorities, mobility providers, and research community has been contributing with solution approaches to achieve the objectives of the envisioned smart mobility. In this paper, we focus on realizing the smart campus mobility, which is a component of a bigger project used for realizing the autonomous driving and imparting it as a solution component of smart mobility. For this, we choose the UAE University campus, as this provides the right settings for the proposed smart campus mobility approach. This will enable us to provide user-friendly and efficient means of transportation to the students and faculty. The solution design is strictly driven by the following goals: modularity, evolvability, and customizability. Therefore, we implement smart campus mobility application and a full scale backend with databases and scheduling approach. Special care is observed in the design and implementation so that the proposed solution is evolved to accommodate the autonomously driven mobility resources, which the authors’ research group is planning to have in the near-future. The smart campus mobility was validated for different use-cases in the UAEU campus.
