Abstract

This case study explores the roles and responsibilities of a midwife working with a woman who has previously undergone female genital mutilation (FGM). The dilemma is presented by the wishes of the husband, who wants the infibulation reinstated after the birth in direct contravention of the law. The midwife’s decisions and communication are carefully articulated to ensure that she takes account of her legal responsibility. FGM is illegal in the UK and there is a mandatory reporting responsibility for all health professionals who encounter a woman or girl who has undergone FGM or is at risk of this.
