Abstract

Rectus diastasis is the widening of the linea alba, which results in laxity of the abdominal wall and lateralization of the rectus muscles from the midline. This allows abdominal contents to bulge and create a cosmetically undesirable protrusion of the abdomen. It also contributes to weakness and functional impairment of the trunk, chronic pain, and urogynecologic dysfunction. Rectus diastasis repair is most commonly performed as a component of abdominoplasty or ventral herniorrhaphy. Techniques for open, mesh-reinforced, and minimally invasive methods of rectus diastasis repair are discussed in this chapter. Patient selection is paramount for success.
