Abstract
Schizophrenia is a complex, understandable yet mental disorder that causes detachment from reality. Because of the unknown etiology of the disease, current psychotherapy and pharmacological treatments only improve the symptoms of the disease without a proper cure. The long-term use of antipsychotic drugs for treatment shows adverse health effects and dissuades patients from taking regular medication. Ancient herbal therapeutics are back in the trend in disease management due to their natural origin, fewer side effects, and cost-effective properties. We discuss the potential of using natural molecules as an alternative therapy for the improvement of schizophrenia-related symptoms and cognitive impairment. We also highlight the probable mechanism of action of different natural molecules directly and indirectly through the gut–brain axis in disease management.
