Abstract

Cardiovascular death is the most common cause of death in western countries. Therefore, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Society of Atherosclerosis (EAS) have developed a joint consensus paper targeting the reduction of cardiovascular events and death.

ing, it is of utmost importance to pay attention to individually targeted lipid-lowering therapy, which requires different low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) targets, depending on the treatment goal. Since the ESC guidelines from 2019 it is recommend to achieve an LDL-C target of at least <55 mg/ dL after a cardiovascular event or in cases of very high cardiovascular risk. Thus, several potent pharmacological therapies are available which should be administered in a stepwise approach, including statins, ezetimibe, proprotein convertase subtilisin/ kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors and inclisiran, which is a small interfering RNA therapy that inhibits the synthesis of PCSK9.
