Abstract

Helium-oxygen (Heliox) mixtures have been used for decades in the management of diverse respiratory disorders ranging from acute upper airway to lower airway obstructions in neonatal, pediatric and adult populations. The delivery devices for heliox remain a topic of debate due to the physical properties of the gas. This chapter briefly discusses the physiology and utility of heliox when combined with non-invasive ventilation (NIV), summarizes the results of past and recent research related to this combination therapy, and outlines technical considerations relevant to its clinical application.
