Abstract
In recent years, lipid-based nanomedicine has emerged as a promising approach for the delivery of therapeutics to the lungs. It can be achieved through various formulations, including liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, and lipid-coated microparticles. The fate of lipid-based nanomedicine in the lungs depends on various factors, including particle size, surface charge, and surface functionalization. Lipid-based nanomedicine can potentially escape into the systemic circulation, and it occurs through various mechanisms, including endocytosis, phagocytosis, and membrane fusion. Lipid-based nanomedicine can undergo metabolic transformations within the lungs or in systemic circulation. The elimination of lipid-based nanomedicine from the lungs can occur through transported to the lymphatic system for eventual drainage into the bloodstream and subsequent hepatic or renal clearance.
