Abstract

Central venous cannulation is a procedure that facilitates administering fluids, blood products, medications, nutritional support, and long-term vascular access. From its most austere beginning in 1929 to today, central venous access has matured into an essential component of modern medical care. The practice of modern medicine has been remarkably improved using ultrasound for vascular access. This significantly enhances patient safety, as well as effectiveness and efficiency. Where to place a central line is typically based on clinical parameters and individual clinician experience and preference. While the evidence does not suggest only one place, each location has known risks and benefits.
